Paperwork before you leave

Closing accounts, deregistering your business, sorting out the lease and the utilities — plus a checklist so nothing follows you home.

checked in August 2026

You can leave Georgia without closing anything — but then accounts, tax obligations and contracts stay behind you, and you will remember them at the worst possible moment. Here is what to close in advance, in the order that works best.

🏦 Bank accounts

Close it or keep it

You can leave a Georgian account open — it is legal and often convenient: remaining subscriptions are paid from it and refunds arrive there. But some banks charge a maintenance fee, and it accrues on its own.

Check:
whether your plan carries a monthly fee

To close it, come in person

Most banks require the holder to be there in person. Remote closure needs a notarised power of attorney for a representative in Georgia, drawn up in advance while you are still here.

Any notary can draw one up, and it is inexpensive.

Before you close it

Clear debts and loans, unlink the account from taxi, delivery and subscription apps, and withdraw the balance. Afterwards ask for a certificate of closure — it helps if questions come up later.

Currency:
the balance can be withdrawn in cash or transferred

📊 Business and tax

File the final return

Returns are filed monthly, and your last month is no exception. While the business is registered you must report even with zero turnover, or fines accumulate.

Close the business or keep it

If you are not coming back, close the business: otherwise the duty to file stays with you. Small business status is cancelled by an application in your tax portal account, after which the account is deactivated.

Deregistration

A sole trader is deregistered at the House of Justice, and it takes about a working day. You need a passport and an application.

🏠 The flat and the utilities

The lease

Give the owner the notice the contract requires, usually a month. Hand the flat back against the inventory of furniture and appliances drawn up when you moved in.

Deposit:
returned if there is no damage

Meter readings

Photograph the electricity, gas and water on the day you leave and send them to the owner — it protects you from someone else's bills afterwards.

Compare them with the photos you took when you moved in.

Clear the utility bills

Pay the final bills by subscriber number and check the balance is zero. The details for each utility are in “Utilities”.

Internet and phone

Cancel the provider contract if it is in your name, and decide about the number: people usually keep a Georgian SIM active for the bank and government services.
